Wanderlust Women: Getaway in 4 easy steps

The word is everywhere these days, wanderlust. Some people associate it with a desire to travel the world, while others see it as an inability to settle. For mermaids like us, the idea of traveling the world is clearly alluring, but is it always practical? The “real” world suggest we get 9-5 jobs to “pay the mortgage”, to settle down, get married, and raise a family. But sometimes, this just doesn’t work. So what happens when your dreams reject what you’ve been taught?

Dreaming of Warmer Days....

Dreaming of Warmer Days....

The answer, pure and simple, is nothing. The world will not end because you aren’t ready to “settle down”. Sure, you may be on the receiving end of some raised eyebrows courtesy of your grandmother, when she asks when you’re going to have a family…. But if she’s anything like mine, your happiness will be what matters most. Just two generations ago, world exploration was something accomplished by the very rich and the very few, and now it’s more obtainable than ever before.  Embracing your wanderlust is to embrace the opportunities your ancestors didn’t and grow from real world experiences.

Life is Beautiful, so embrace it!

Life is Beautiful, so embrace it!

In the last few decades, we’ve seen a new generation of woman emerge, the type of woman who answers to herself first and foremost, and wants to make the world a more beautiful place. I am so proud to be part of this new generation of women around the world. We are more mindful of others, we care about the planet, we want to make a difference…and we do. Whether you experience your wanderlust through world travel, switching up careers, or just changing your daily routine, we are a generation of women who are continually growing, and that’s pretty special if you ask me (you did, right?!)

Where to next?

Where to next?

The important thing to remember is that the definition of wanderlust is up to you. You are the artist of your life’s portrait. You determine what’s important to you and you make the decisions. Growing up I was taught that anything worth having was worth working for; and, while this is true, I much prefer the saying “no time like the present”. And where you wander is up to you….

Exploring around the island (and getting lost) is the best part… Where are we?

That being said, while we’re on the topic of travel, might I suggest Barbados? The local girls will know what this tropical island paradise has to offer, but it’s more important that we share it with the world! So here are a few easy steps to following your heart and fulfilling your wanderlust, in beautiful Barbados…

1. Save save save! What good is planning for a trip if you can’t afford it? Denying yourself a few nights out with friends will pay back dividends during your vacation. Trust me.

2. Make your plans known. Whether this means arranging for a pet sitter, requesting time off at work, or filling-in your parents, make sure people know your plans. Taking off at a moments notice can be fun, but don’t have it result in a missing persons report!

3. Get the App: Barbados Tourism has a wonderful app (available here) that can help you find accommodations, restaurants, nightlife, and shopping. Spread that local love!

4. Let us KNOW! Going to be on the Rock (Barbados) sometime soon? Mermaids let us know, we’d love to meet you ☺

Tell us where you want to go!
